In the original manga?s story, Fumi and Akira were close childhoodfriends until Fumi had to move away. Ten years after losing touch witheach other, the two girls meet again as high school freshmen. The twostruggle to reconnect after so much has changed, and both deal with thetrials and tribulations of high school ? sometimes independently andsometimes with each other?s help.

In 1925 (year 14 of the Taisho period), after being told by a baseballplayer that women should become housewives instead of going to school,two 14-year-old Japanese high school girls named Koume and Akiko decideto start a baseball team in order to prove him wrong. During this time,when even running was considered too vulgar for women, baseball isknown as "what the boys do" and they face many difficulties whensearching members, getting permission from their parents and whenlearning about the sport itself.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni takes place in 1986 during the time frame ofOctober the 4th and the 5th on a secluded island named Rokkenjima(???). The head of the wealthy Ushiromiya family, Kinz? Ushiromiya, wholives on and owns Rokkenjima, is near death, and eleven of his familymembers arrive on the island to discuss how Kinz?'s assets will bedivided once he is dead. Also on the island are five of Kinz?'sservants, and his personal physician. After the eleven family membersarrive, a typhoon traps them on the island and shortly after peoplestart to get mysteriously murdered.
